The Enigmatic Nazca Lines of Southern Peru
Carved into a desolate stretch of pampa in southern Peru, the Nazca Lines present one of archaeology’s most intriguing mysteries. On the surface of the arid coastal desert, these shallow markings resemble mere furrows. However, when viewed from the sky, they transform into elaborate geometric shapes, including trapezoids, spirals, and zigzags, alongside stylized representations of various animals such as hummingbirds and spiders. Among these is even a unique depiction of a feline with the tail of a fish.
Spanning vast stretches of land, thousands of these lines leap across cliffs and navigate ravines without altering direction; the longest of them is remarkably straight and stretches for over 15 miles. The world first became aware of these vast incisions in the mid-1920s, when a Peruvian scientist stumbled upon them while hiking through the foothills of Nazca. As the following decade unfolded, commercial pilots began to reveal the true scale of this aerial artwork, which is believed to have been crafted between 200 B.C. and 700 A.D. by a civilization that flourished long before the rise of the Inca.
“It took nearly a century to discover a total of 430 figurative geoglyphs,” noted Masato Sakai, an archaeologist from Yamagata University in Japan who has dedicated 30 years to studying these extraordinary lines. Dr. Sakai is the lead author of a recent survey published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which uncovered 303 previously uncharted geoglyphs in just six months, nearly doubling the number documented as of 2020.
The research team employed cutting-edge artificial intelligence in combination with low-flying drones that surveyed approximately 243 square miles of this mysterious landscape. Their findings not only expanded the inventory of geoglyphs but also provided valuable insights into the possible purpose of these enigmatic symbols.
